Post Extraction Instructions

NOW THAT YOU HAVE HAD YOUR EXTRACTION, FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE GUIDELINES SHOULD REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF DISCOMFORT AND INCREASE THE RATE OF HEALING.

1. A clean healthy mouth heals more rapidly than an unhealthy one.

2. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

3. Avoid very hot, very cold, hard or chewy foods and excess alcohol.

4. We do not award medals for heroism; it is sensible to take pain killers for two days following an extraction. (Your usual headache tablet) FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS.

5. Should the wound start to bleed excessively, (this is indicated by a "liver like" clot being produced) remove clot, rinse mouth with tepid water and apply a small compress. This can be made from cotton wool in clean linen. Place this on the wound and bite with firm, constant pressure for at least 20 minutes. DO NOT USE A TISSUE.

6. If prolonged bleeding or pain occurs, contact the practice or telephone the emergency number, (see below)

7. Take any prescribed tablets regularly as directed.

24 HOURS AFTER YOUR SURGERY Hot salt water mouth baths should be used. Place one level teaspoon of normal table salt in half a pint of hot water and dissolve thoroughly. Being careful not to burn yourself take a mouthful of the solution and hold it over the wound until it has gone cold. Spit it out and repeat until all the solution is used up. Do this three times a day. AVOID VIGOROUS RINSING.
